Health Effects of Pesticide Mixtures: Unexpected Insights From the Salmon Brain

Nat Scholz examines how pesticides that run off the land and mix in rivers and streams combine to have a greater than expected toxic effect. He examines the salmon nervous system, but these mixtures in the food supply for humans may also pose unexpected health risks for people.

According to Scholz, “We have a pretty good handle on how to assess the health effects of single chemicals in conventional toxicity trials. But the real world is usually more complex, and exposures to mixtures of chemicals can be more of the rule than the exception. One of the major scientific challenges of our generation is to develop new approaches to anticipate and head off any ill effects of interacting chemicals.”

Scholz and his colleagues found that salmon died when exposed to combinations of pesticides that were not deadly in the same amounts individually. The research points to the need for more study of how combinations of pesticides found on fruits and vegetables affect humans.

Duh--How about the internal toxic poisoning of multiple interacting chemicals, that is having patients on 14 different prescription drugs!!

Doc, where do they think the "pee" of all these innocent people ingesting these toxic drug cocktails go to....Maybe they think folks "recycle" them to save money.......

REVAMP, REUSE, RECYLCE, then you die and take many more with you... !!!!!!!!! Slowly but surely.!!!!!!!!!!

This is one of my pet hates. I have watched a friend slowly but surely become dependant on prescription pills. Not an addict but as she has counteracted one illness with a drug - the side effects start and then has to have another type to cure that one and so on . The new one causes more problems and its back to the chemist with another prescription. Her original problem was high blood pressure. No-one suggested exercise, salt reduction or any other "healthy " option. Just drugs.

From 2 tablets a couple of years ago she is now on 9. Nobody has discussed the overall effect of these drugs combined. The toxicity in her body must be huge. We know that simple foods like grapefruit can have an effect on homeopathic , herbal and prescription drugs. Yet I see very little research on combinations of Big Pharma drugs unless there is a few deaths.

I can empathize with your feelings.  I have had to watch many patients over the years die well before their time from being on a dozen or more different prescription drugs at the same time.  The patients will break out in a rash that is obviously a drug reaction, but they are on so many drugs that none of the doctors know where to begin to figure it out.  So they send the patient to the dermatologist for more creams and UV treatments to try and control the rash.

The only way they can get off the medications is to flush them all down the toilet (not on my recommendation) and if they live 2-3 days they usually feel the best they have in years.  Unfortunately, rather than making lifestyle changes at that point in time, they usually just gradually go back on to medications and start the process all over again.

Ignorance can be helped.  Stupidity is forever.

Until there is a unified, empirically verified, and national 'organic' standard in the USA, the is similar or close to that of the UK Soils Association stnadrds and policed, instead of the current money/bribes for paper certification rubber stamping, then consumerhealth will continued to be compromised, and economic rip-offs will continue, among consumers seeking safer fruit, vegetables, seeds, flower, produce, meat, poultry, fish, nut crops, etc., and not truly getting them.

Those of us in the know, living outside of the US, avoid US certified organic produce as much as possible. We need to spread the word because if more people did not buy US organic product then maybe the producers would ask "Why" possibly leading to change.

My question is, "When will enough be enough?"  Once you take one prescription, or use a toxin, it is a downward spiral due to side effects.  When will your friend, Triciamc, say enough is enough, and look for an alternative.  The drs overdosed me on anti-biotics for 3 years and ruined my immune system before they told me that if I drank water I wouldn't have bladder infections!  I was so sick, I decided that if I was going to live to see my children grow up and get married, I would have to take my health into my own hands.  That was over 25 years ago, and I have had only one infection since and that was due to mercury detox.  My husband is working on getting off High BP meds.  He's almost there!  We both say' "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH AND WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH!"

Duh!

Just this week on the news there was a report of some drug patch that was leaking. They advised listeners to NOT use the patches & to flush them down the toilet. What kind of damage does that do to the water supply? Yikes...

Yes, people seem to want to flush their problems away, personally (since i don't think i could pull it off now being 16 and living with parents) i want to incorporate one of those compost toilets in my future house. Why poop in the water to just filter it back out when you can put it to use i say :]

The cocktail of drugs that end up in the streams are there to help the evolutionary process of the fish, frogs, salamanders etc. . . . Survival of the fittest.

Who knows, new super strains of drug resistant creatures with new horror film features and abilities may evolve.  Maybe we could actually create and then be saved by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
