A trial program for cervical cancer vaccine in the UK has encountered opposition from parents, with 20 percent refusing to give permission for their daughters to have the injection.
Many parents said that were worried about the long-term safety, on which there is no data. Others were concerned that allowing the vaccination could promote promiscuity, since the cancer-causing virus is passed through sexual intercourse.
The pilot study included more than 2,800 girls aged 12 and 13 at 36 secondary schools in Greater Manchester.
