Have Drug Ads Gone Too Far?

According to lawmakers and the American Medical Association, drug makers have been deceptively marketing their products to the public.

The AMA suggested that a moratorium be placed on ads for newly approved drugs until doctors are educated and regulators have signed off on the messages. Representative Bart Stupak said Congress should consider new restrictions on ads.

Drug makers spent $5.4 billion last year on direct-to-consumer advertising. That represents a 500 percent increase since regulatory rules changed a decade ago, allowing drug makers to more easily air commercials. Lawmakers are arguing that the ads gloss over risks, and may cause he overprescription of expensive medicines.

New Zealand is the only country other than the U.S. that allows drug ads on television.

Why do they need to spend all this money to convince us that their drugs work.

If they worked, they would just sell themselves.

Right on!!!

Plus, if they really work, shouldn't their efforts be on proving/selling to the doctor?  Why advertise to the general public what can only be prescribed after a diagnosis?

Convince the public that they have a disease, that its hereditary (meaning diet and lifestyle will not help) and only THIS drug will help them.  And then let the patient pester the doctor who can only spend 3 minutes when them anyway!   It's genius on the drug companies part.  Too bad these genius minds could be better spent on actually saving lives!

OMG, your stole the words out of my family's mouth.  If people really needed a drug, they would search for it.

AMEN!!

One of my biggest pet peeves is being bombarded by these drug ads... Albeit in magazines, on TV, etc.  For example.." I lose my inhibitions to ride a mechanical bull because I used this cream to rid my face of the parenthesis" or the infamous "Viva Viagara".

Cindy Lu - I totally agree!

I'd like to wipe that grin off of "Smiling Bob's" face, while we're at it!

It should be plain illegal to advertise any drug anywhere in the world. At best your doctor should be the one to advise patients since they already in bed with Big Pharma.....

Right on seg.  It should be illegal to advertise drugs on TV. Part of the problem is they are thinking of the patient as the consumer. Drugs are not safe. They are not something someone shops for on TV. They should be a last resort option that your Dr. chooses at best. Advertising On TV lends the false assumption that drugs are safe, and the best alternative. What are kids who grow up watching the ad's going to believe. That It's natural to live your life on meds? That's what big pharma wants.

Every-other ad on television is an ad for somekind of drug... it's ludicrous! And when you stop to think about how much television is viewed by the average person, and how misinformed those same people are (at least in-part due to watching all that tv), this glaring problem becomes both increasingly terrifying and clear simultaneously.
