U.S. Government Tries to Stop Mad Cow Testing

The Bush administration has urged a federal appeals court to stop meatpackers from testing all their animals for mad cow disease. A skeptical judge questioned whether the government has that authority.

The government is seeking to reverse a lower court ruling allowing Kansas-based Creekstone Farms Premium Beef to conduct more comprehensive testing in order to satisfy demand from overseas customers.

Less than one percent of slaughtered cows are tested for the disease under Agriculture Department guidelines. The agency argued that widespread testing could result in a false positive that would scare consumers.

Creekstone attorney Russell Frye contended that the agency has no authority to prevent companies from using additional tests to reassure customers.

Larger meatpackers have opposed Creekstone's desire to use wider testing out of fear that consumer pressure would force them to begin testing all animals too. Increased testing would raise the price of meat by a few cents per pound.

Regarding Mad Cows Disease I believe the main worry would be with conventional raised cows, however it looks like Creekstone Farms is trying to raise the bar, but the Bush Admin is seeing this as a threat for other farms and ultimately a higher price for beef....There must be more in the pie that meets the eye...

That said i'd sooner pay a few cents more and have peace of mind enjoying my medium rare grass fed prime rib steak knowing it free from M.C disease, but then again my local farmer raises his cows under very humane conditions in accordance with nature, so i don't worry to much about this but for others who don't have access to good local meats it poses a genuine health risk.........

If they stop the testing, I won't be buying conventional beef any more...not that I buy that much of it now, but I'll replace beef with BISON on my shopping list.

Now we wouldn't want to let some small time producer say his stuff is BETTER than all the USDA "prime/choice" stuff, now would we?  That would let the cat out of the bag that we aren't REALLY protecting the citizens, huh?
