How Do You Know Someone is at Risk for Road Rage?

Bumper stickers speak volumes about a vehicle’s driver, but not always in the way they might hope. People who customize their cars with stickers and other adornments, no matter what they are, tend to be more prone to road rage than other people.

Road rage -- bouts of aggressive driving such as speeding or tailgating, or confrontations with other motorists -- has risen dramatically in recent years. In 1995, the American Automobile Association found 12,000 injuries and 200 deaths were linked to U.S. road rage. In 2008, the numbers are estimated to exceed 25,000 injuries and 370 deaths, and many more road rage incidents go unrecorded.

Researchers quizzed hundreds of volunteers about their cars and driving habits. Participants were asked to describe the value and condition of their cars, as well as whether they had personalized them in any way, such as with seat covers, bumper stickers, special paint jobs, stereos and even plastic dashboard toys. They also asked questions about how the participants responded to specific driving situations.

People who had a larger number of personalized items on or in their car were 16 percent more likely to engage in road rage. Only the number of bumper stickers, and not their content, predicted road rage.

OK, I am here to say that I have bumper stickers on my vehicle.  The reason I have them, admittedly, is pride!  Pride in the fact that "my son is a Marine," another son is in the Army, I'm proud of my favorite sports team... you get the idea.  To say that this is an indicator I would be likely to exhibit road rage is outlandish!!
Come on people, haven't you ever been the victim of a person with road rage who had ZERO bumper stickers?  I certainly have.  That's just the thing about road rage, it can come from unsuspecting people.

Also, having bumper stickers like "Proud to be a Marine", or "National Rifle Association", "Proud to Own A Pit Bull", can also sometimes  change criminals' minds from stealing your car or items inside!

I don't currently have any personality on my vehicle (mostly 'cause I had to get a new vehicle thanks to an uninsured driver totaling my ragtop), but I plan to get a new plate surround tomorrow from my alma mater's bookstore & eventually, it will also be decorated with a Parker decal on the window.

On a 1967 Ford Fairlane with 4-55 A/C that I used to drive to UTA in the 1980's, I had a sticker that said DON'T LAUGH, IT'S PAID FOR!

How many more cars are on the road now? I'm guessing the numbers don't look as "increased" when that's taken into account. I'm sure the incidences of road rage increase exponentially with increased traffic density as well.

People who personalize their car like that do so partially to be confrontational as it is so this study makes sense.

This article makes excessive car decor sound like a childish bid for attention - so it's not surprising they throw temper tantrums on the road.

What makes you think AAA cares about personal freedoms being ripped away?

Be careful out there with decorating your wheels - next thing we know, insurance companies will be using the results of this study when determining insurance rates.

The cars I stay far away from are those with "Holy roller" stuff all over.  Invariably, cars that tout, "I'm a Christian!  or Praise the Lord" seem to think that since they are pious, that they can get away with driving like they want to murder everyone.

That's is just from my experience.

I've been pretty tempted to say ask a few drivers to remove those stickers for that very reason...

maybe, they probably bought the car with the stickers... :-)

It's a shame, but true, that most "christians" give real Christians a bad name. Just because one claims something doesn't make it so!!!
