The World is Getting Happier

Despite the anxieties of modern times, surveys show that happiness has been on the rise around the world in recent years. The uptick is attributed to economic growth in previously poor countries and the democratization of others, along with rising social tolerance for women and minority groups.

Denmark is the happiest nation and Zimbabwe the least. The United States ranks 16th.

The survey, which involves 52 countries and 350,000 people, found that the Happiness Index created from the answers rose in 40 countries between 1981 and 2007, and it fell in the other 12.

People (in general) are fatter, more sedentary, poorer, eating mostly processed foods, drinking polluted water and taking all sorts of pharmaceuticals - and they're happier? Maybe we're all on the wrong track here.

Or maybe they're drugged into happiness.

I don't buy your logic, BeeGirl.

You assert that one can't be happy if...

You're fat.
You like to lay on the couch.
You don't have much money.
You eat fast food.
You drink tap water.
You take drugs.

NONE of these have anything to do with happiness.

MrAK- that’s not what I meant at all, but I don‘t always express myself clearly. Let me try again.
The toxicity of your body affects not only your physical health, but your emotional state as well . Based on my own experience and observations, I believe that a large percentage of depression, and even anger, is caused by lack of proper nutrition (too many processed carbs, not enough healthy fats) and exercise.
Personally, I’ve been happier without money than with and I probably should have left that one out.

Wow!  An area where female castration is forced upon young girls, just so happens to be an area where they are most unhappy?  Wow.  Who'd a thunk??

Yeah, it doesn't seem right.

War, global warming, natural disasters, pollution, poisoning, toxic chemicals, environmental decimation, animal extinction, Big Pharma, drugs, Big Oil, gas prices, Monsanto, evil corporate empire, the government in cahoots (heh, what a funny word) with big businesses, politics, forced drugging, government corruption, torture, secret prisons, "new world order" conspiracies, "end of the world" theories, Draconian policies, nanny government, elites, socioeconomic gaps, poverty, sickness, starvation, human trafficking, modern human slavery, food crisis, health care crisis, water shortage, illiteracy, human rights abuse, mindless conformity, bad economy, fearmongering, brainwashing, bias, prejudice, bigotry, intolerance, apathy, segregation...

How can anyone be happy?

And I do think there are pills that drug you into being happy. I've once talked to my doctor once about being stressed out and having anger problems. She said there were "happy pills" you can take. Thank you, no.

I can't think of another question that would elicit more misleading answers than this one.... Oh, wait — how about asking married couples "How many times a week do you have sex?"
