Merck Vioxx Trial Was Conducted to Boost Sales

Merck’s marketing department devised a study on the painkiller Vioxx solely in order to persuade 600 doctors involved in the trial to prescribe the drug and recommend it to their peers.

This information is based on 100 internal company memos and reports about the study known as Advantage. The memos and reports were obtained from lawsuits against Merck over heart risks tied to Vioxx, a drug which has been withdrawn.

The report provides some of the first evidence of what is thought to be a widespread practice: recruiting doctors for a study to boost their confidence in a new drug and get them to promote it to colleagues. According to Kevin Hill, of Harvard Medical School, the Advantage study “was marketing masquerading as science.”

Considering doctors are supposed to be so intelligent, it surprises me that they fall for such scams!  The purpose seems to be pretty obvious to me. Maybe the doctors just like the perks!  In that case, the patient's best interest is not as important as the benefits.  And people wonder why I don't go to the medical doctor!

Don't blame the doctors. Big Pharma has the resources to manipulate anyone, regardless of the victim's intelligence, knowledge or integrity. They have "scientists" doing "research" and marketers manipulating the research to make it look ligit to even the professional reader. And what practicing physician has the time to investigate all the information that's being fed to him?

They also use ghostwriting so it makes it seem like their "research" has a consensus approval from many sources.

Too many doctors, just like the people, are discouraged from thinking or questioning. That's exactly what they want. Or you have a really impressionable doctor or one that's just greedy. Not all doctors are like that. I talked to my doctor about what he thinks of the ethics of the pharmaceutical industry once (I only go for a monthly checkup, say hi to him, nothing more-no drugs or shots). And he agrees that they are a business and greed can be a motivational factor. He says that he turned down the drug reps who came to him and said that he only prescribes medicine that he knows are safe.

I am fuming and seething with anger whenever I hear Merck. They're the ones behind...Gardasil...
