Patient Sues Diabetes Drug Maker

A Virginia man yesterday filed the first personal injury lawsuit stemming from injuries associated with the use of the diabetes medication Byetta. Victor Deleon alleges that the manufacturer and marketers of the drug, Amylin Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly, failed to adequately test and monitor the side effects of Byetta and didn't warn doctors or patients of the risk of developing pancreatitis. Deleon was hospitalized in December of 2007 after developing the sometimes-deadly condition.

The lawsuit comes only two days after the FDA announced that it has received six reports of hemorrhagic or necrotizing pancreatitis in patients taking Byetta since October of 2007. Two of the six patients died.

Deleon's lawsuit claims that Amylin "failed to adequately warn prescribing physicians of the risk of pancreatitis, of measures needed to properly assess the appropriateness of prescribing the drug to certain categories of patients, and of measures doctors and patients could and should take to minimize the risk."

Byetta was one of the options offered to me when I was diagnosed with diabetes 18 months ago. I refused, of course...but I was the only one in my "classes" of 18-20 people who was willing to commit to diet and exercise to manage my condition.

I wonder whether the three RNs who facilitated  those classes are even aware of the news about Byetta. They certainly were not open to hearing what's wrong with aspartame in diet sodas. All were steeped in the conventional medical model, "The FDA cares about you and your safety," and were not the least interested in opening their minds to other perspectives.

Hi Islander, I am from a diabetic family and have been careful with my diet since the mid seventies, when I became pregnant with my first child. I'm so glad you are sticking with diet and exercise to manage your condition. Hopefully we'll keep you around awhile! Some of my family members who bought the medical model hook, line, and sinker are no longer around. So far, I have checked out all clear on the diabetes and will continue to exercise and eat right. Party on!
