Chemicals Banned in Toys but Allowed in Prescription Drugs

Recently, the U.S. Congress enacted a law banning phthalates, which are added to plastics to increase their flexibility, from toys and other children’s products. Europe had earlier taken this same action. Phthalates can cause abnormal reproductive tracts, sperm damage, and reduced testosterone.

Dr. Russ Hauser, a Harvard professor of environmental epidemiology, has called pharmaceuticals “an unrecognized source of potential high exposure (to phthalates).” There are at least 47 different prescription medications that contain phthalates. A thin layer of phthalate-containing polymer coats many timed-release medications.

A case study of a man who took the medication Asacol to treat his inflamed colon found that he was contaminated with 100 times more dibutyl phthalate than had ever been recorded in a human being. The se of phthalates in prescription and over-the-counter medication ignores the potential for high delivered doses of phthalates to vulnerable segments of the population -- including pregnant women and young children

This is crazy. It blows my mind that the drug companies are practically untouchable.  If we all work together, we can change this over time.  We need to put an end to their fairy-tale world where they do whatever they want.  I don't know exactly where to start, but maybe a letter to my congressmen will be a first step.  One letter will not change much but if we all write letters, maybe they will get the hint.

It won't help. The government are sell outs to big industry. Occasionally they do the right thing but only if everyone gets into a huge uproar. But that doesn't mean they're going to stop there or the conglomerate won't look for a back door.

Industry in this country is more powerful than the people. They are more powerful than the government because they've turned it into their puppet and cronies. And they are more powerful than the president because it didn't matter who became president (Obama or McCain) because the industry will still go about its agenda as usual. Except maybe Ron Paul. But even he can't put a stop to everything because he needs Congress and the courts, which industry has control over.

People are too distracted from the real problems plaguing this country.

If Pharma is starting to go under (especially in this time of economic dominoes), you can bet the government will protect them. If one day comes and people go rioting at the gates of Pharma after some massive disaster, the government will probably send in troops to defend them.

No, getting rid of the FDA isn't going to help. It's only what some want because some believe industry can police itself. Well, I guess since they're not doing anything right, it's almost like the FDA is nonexistent already. We need to tear everything down from the FDA and the crony politics and rebuild it from scratch.

Hi jpants83, start by telling as many people as possible the truth about the FDA.  The FDA (and Health Canada) DOES NOT do any independent testing of any pharmaceutical drug!  They rely on the pharmaceutical company for all their information before issuing a notice of compliance.  Everyone seems to have a misconception about the FDA and Health Canada, that somehow they test all these drugs before putting them on the market.  They don't.

IDK if any of you are interested or not, but the naturally fermented products called "Kefir" and "Kombucha" are great health boosters.  Do a Google search to learn more.  Perhaps we won't need prescription drugs except in acute cases if we bolster ourselves with natural foods.

Best of all, once you buy K+K, you never have to buy it again!

Part of the answer lies in eating a healthy diet and following a healthy lifestyle so you don't become ill and a candidate for Big Pharma to peddle their drugs to in the first place.
