Another Easy Target For Drug Companies: Medical Students

The mega-drug companies have figured out just about all the angles. Despite the brave work by folks like Dr. David Graham, drug companies represent the largest lobby in this country, extending their influence to Congress and even the White House. So, it should come as no surprise medical students are just as susceptible and naive about the "gifts" drug companies throw at them...

A recent survey of more than 1,000 future doctors studying at eight American medical schools was disappointing to say the least. By the numbers:

  • Respondents received at least one gift or were invited to a sponsored event every week.
  • Almost half of the students had received textbooks as gifts.
  • Some 80 percent of third-year students believed they were entitled to gifts from drug companies.

It certainly appears medical students -- at least those taking the conventional route -- are just as prone to manipulation as their older peers. That's why I believe the most overlooked problem in the health care system today is avarice.

Studies like these keep me focused on my life's mission to replace the current "quick-fix cure" paradigm with one focused on treating the real causes of disease.
