Poor Mental, Physical Health Linked to Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is one of the common roadblocks that prevent patients from getting a good night's sleep. A new survey of some 1,500 adults reports almost 10 percent of the respondents suffered from RLS, and more women than men have it. What's more, patients who have RLS face a whole host of other health challenges, both physical and mental too.

A good deal of these risk factors sound like a laundry list of ailments associated with the obesity epidemic.

  • Sleep apnea
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis

Of course, conventional medicine would rather battle RLS with a drug -- the FDA recently approved drug ropinrole (Requip). A better, safer course of action would be to treat the true causes of the problem, meaning the lack of sleep associated with obesity.
