Tylenol Celebrates Golden Anniversary

Hard to believe Tylenol, one of the world's best known over-the-counter (OTC) painkillers, celebrated its 50th anniversary Tuesday. Many of you probably recall a cyanide poisoning scare in Chicago 23 years ago that forced drugmaker Johnson & Johnson to repackage Tylenol and the rest of its drugs in tamper-proof bottles, a move that quickly became an industry standard.

Flashing forward to today, Tylenol sales have enjoyed double-digit growth over the past year, all thanks to the latest drug scandals involving the exit of Vioxx and Bextra from the market.

As you well know, however, no drug sold over the counter is guaranteed to be safe, one of the seven misconceptions I wrote about last year. In fact, recent studies have linked the regular use of acetaminophen to higher rates of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and reduced lung functioning and, perhaps, liver failure.

If you're looking for safer, healthier options to treat your pain, I urge you to review my seven anti-inflammatory alternatives.
