A Smart Way To Promote Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is one of the most natural and health-promoting things a mother can do for her baby as well as herself. A unique plan recently announced by Massachusetts legislators hopefully will boost the number of breastfeeding moms there. New moms delivering their babies at Massachusetts hospitals won't be receiving free diaper bags, filled with baby formula samples (among many freebies) any more, thanks to a legislative ban on the practice.

Although this regulation -- the first by any state in America -- doesn't block hospitals from giving mothers formula samples, the aim here, according to experts, is to put an end to a hospital's indirect endorsement of formula over breastfeeding, certainly a wonderful thing.

As you might expect, one spokeswoman for one of the leading formula makers believes the ban to be disrespectful to women and "over the top."

If breastfeeding isn't an option for you and your new baby, however, there are certainly a number of healthy alternatives at your disposal, outlined in the must-read series I posted earlier this year.
