Fears over the possible pandemic of Bird Flu

It is known that there are at least 15 different strains of Avian Influenza that could infect birds around the world. However, the only subtype that can cause severe disease in humans is the H5N1 form. The current outbreak is caused by this strain and it is highly contagious amongst birds.

Influenza viruses are known to be very unstable, and they do posses the ability to mutate rapidly. It is feared among Scientists that a new strain of the virus could evolve, that could be easily spread from one individual to the next, resulting in an extremely contagious disease. This could happen if an individual was already infected with the human form of Influenza and also contracted Avian Influenza, resulting in the production of a new hybrid. Humans would have no immune response to resist the new strain of the diseases.
