Does Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Predict Diabetes?

Although many more Americans are suffering from diabetes and don't even know it, their bodies may be giving them a subtle physical hint anyway in the form of carpal tunnel syndrome, according to a new study.

Researchers compared the health of some 2,600 diabetes patients over the previous decade and before they were diagnosed to a group of healthy folks about twice as large (matched based on age, gender and where they lived) to detect any abnormal signs of carpal tunnel syndrome.

After accounting for various risk factors, diabetes patients were 36 percent more likely to suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome, and to a lesser extent Bell's palsy, before being diagnosed than the control group.
