Obesity is Out of Control

A senior World Health Organization official warned that governments must take urgent action against obesity or it will soon be too late. More than 1 billion people are obese worldwide -- nearly one in six people -- enough to threaten a generation of children, and risk bankrupting nations that fail to act early enough. Suggested solutions reported at the 10th International Congress on Obesity included:

  • Eliminating government agricultural subsidies that kept sugary, fatty foods cheaper than fruit and vegetables.
  • Educating the public and politicians about the causes of obesity.
  • A total ban on advertising of junk food to children.
  • Involving the food and sugary drinks industries, which many see as the root of the problem.

But don't wait for a new government agenda if you or your child is overweight or obese, you can take the steps to getting healthy on your own, starting with some basic lifestyle changes.
