Doctors Call for UK Trans Fat Ban

Two doctors, writing in the British Medical Journal, say that banning artificial trans fats in the UK could prevent 11,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths every year.

Trans fats are made by partially hydrogenating of vegetable oils, a process that gives them a higher melting point and longer shelf-life. But putting them through this process also causes them to lower your levels of high-density lipoproteins (“good” cholesterol) and raise your levels of low-density lipoproteins (“bad” cholesterol).
