Fast Food Fuelling Asian Diabetes Boom

Many people in Vietnam have diabetes but are unaware of it, and the condition is spreading fast in South East Asia.

A study found that about 11 percent of men and 12 percent of women in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City had undiagnosed type 2 diabetes.  This was in addition to the 4 percent of people who had been diagnosed.

BBC News reports that according to the researchers:

"Dietary patterns have been changing dramatically in Vietnam in recent years, particularly in the cities as they become more Westernized ... There are fast food outlets everywhere."

Diabetes can be caused by high levels of sugar in the diet and inadequate exercise.
