Leading Scientist Claims Five in Six New Drugs Have Little or No Benefit

A new study suggests that as many as 85 percent of new drugs offer few if any new benefits.

Professor Donald Light, the author of the research, described the drug industry as a 'market for lemons' in which companies hide information about serious side-effects and overstate benefits.

The Daily Mail reports:

“Then, they spend two to three times more on marketing than on research to persuade doctors to prescribe these new drugs ... [Professor Light] alleged that the pharmaceutical industry owned companies in charge of drug testing and provided 'firewalls' of legal protection behind which information about dangers or lack of effectiveness could be hidden.”
