Organic Farming Produces Better Fruit and Has Lower Environmental Impact

A comparison of organic and conventional strawberry farms found that organic farms produced more flavorful and nutritious berries. They also left the soil healthier and more genetically diverse.

The study was among the most comprehensive of its kind. It analyzed the taste, nutrition and quality of three strawberry varieties on dozens of fields, and tested soil DNA along with 31 chemical and biological soil properties.

According to Eurekalert:

  • The organic strawberries had significantly higher antioxidant activity and concentrations of ascorbic acid and phenolic compounds.
  • The organic strawberries had longer shelf life.
  • Anonymous testers ... found one variety of organic strawberries was sweeter, had better flavor, and ... appearance. The testers judged the other two varieties to be similar.

Mercola.com, by the way, is currently working on creating a gardening site to encourage more home gardens. Always remember that you can grow delicious organic strawberries yourself!
