Obesity Accelerates Leukemia

A new study is the first to demonstrate that obesity can directly accelerate the progression of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Obesity has been associated with an increased incidence of many cancers, but until now it was unknown whether this was a direct effect of obesity or associated with other factors.

Researchers induced obesity in mice with ALL.  They investigators found that obesity directly increased the risk of ALL, particularly in older mice.

Science Daily reports:

“This observation was consistent with the type of cumulative effect seen with other exposure-related cancers, such as lung cancer related to smoking and breast cancer resulting from increased estrogen exposure. Observing the difference in older animals also agreed with the other obesity-related effects from cumulative exposure such as heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis.”
