Breastfeeding Burns 500 Calories a Day

Breastfeeding advocates are offering another incentive for mothers -- weight loss. Nursing can burn up to 500 calories a day.

This can translate into other health benefits, including a reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes. The information comes from a New York Department of Health public health education campaign aimed at educating new mothers on the health benefits of breast-feeding.

The New York Daily News reports:

“While the physicians behind the campaign say new mothers should continue to breast-feed for a year or longer, many choose not to nurse beyond six months, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”
