Are MRI Scans Too Sensitive?

MRI scans could be resulting in women who have breast cancer having unnecessary operations, such as mastectomies. The scans may simply be over-sensitive.

This was demonstrated by the results of a study which looked at breast cancer patients being considered for non-surgical treatment.

BBC News reports:

“[The study] found that when an MRI scan is carried out, it is so sophisticated that it can pick up on harmless tissue.”
