Should You Buy Food with Cash or Plastic?

New behavioral research finds that people who buy food with cash tend to make better choices than people who pay with credit and debit cards.

Researchers looked at the shopping behavior of 1,000 people who generally shop at chain stores. They examined purchases over a six-month period, and also how each person paid for their items.

According to the New York Times:

“In this analysis, consumers were significantly more likely to purchase unhealthy foods like cakes and cookies when using a credit or debit card. Interestingly, consumers who shopped with larger baskets were also ‘more susceptible to impulsive purchase of unhealthy products,’ the authors found.”
