Lying on Your Left Side Eases Heartburn

If you suffer from chronic heartburn and fall asleep in the wrong position, acid can slip into your esophagus.

Many doctors recommend sleeping on an incline. But sleeping on your left side can also make a difference. Studies have found that sleeping on your right side tends to aggravated heartburn. Sleeping on your left, conversely, tends to reduce the symptoms.

According to the New York Times:

“The reason is not entirely clear. One hypothesis holds that right-side sleeping relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, between the stomach and the esophagus. Another holds that left-side sleeping keeps the junction between stomach and esophagus above the level of gastric acid.”
