Over 84,000 Everyday Chemicals May Be Harming Kids

Only about 1 percent of the 84,000 chemicals on the market today have been studied for safety. U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg said this means that children in the United States are "guinea pigs in an uncontrolled experiment."

Lautenberg has introduced a bill that would require chemical manufacturers to prove the safety of their products before they start selling them. The current law (the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976) has resulted in the banning of just five chemicals.

CNN reports:

“Manufacturers often cite confidentiality laws in refusing to reveal safety data ... and they say new regulations would infringe on profitability ... [T]he United States is far behind other countries, especially in Western Europe, that have already banned several substances.”
