Are ERs Fueling Prescription Drug Abuse?

A growing number of prescription drug addicts are finding their fix in Emergency Rooms. According to the CDC, ER visits involving the non-medical use of narcotic pain medications more than doubled in the U.S. between 2004 and 2008.

The issue is well-known -- it has been featured in popular medical dramas, discussed on blogs, and written about in editorials. But the problem continues to increase.

ABC News reports:

“... [P]rescription opioids are currently the number one cause of poisoning deaths in the country, surpassing cocaine and heroin as causes of drug associated death.”
