Studies Show the Downside of Cancer Screening

Two studies show that increased cancer screening can result in false positives, as well as emotional anguish and sometimes unnecessary treatment. One of the studies looked at prostate cancer, and the other at breast cancer.

Although the studies were looking at two different cancers in two different populations, both studies came to similar conclusions. Many patients are receiving unnecessary treatments.

ABC News reports:

“In the breast cancer screening study ... [f]or every additional cancer found there were 55 false positives ... Meanwhile, according to the prostate cancer study's authors, between the years 1986 and 2005, 1 million ‘additional’ men were diagnosed with prostate cancer.”
