Twinkie Diet Helps Nutrition Professor Lose 27 Pounds

For 10 weeks, Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition, ate a sugary snack such as a Twinkie every three hours instead of having meals. His premise was that in weight loss, pure calorie counting was what mattered most, rather than the nutritional content of the food.

And in fact, by limiting himself to less the 1,800 calories a day, he lost 27 pounds in two months.

According to CNN:

“But you might expect other indicators of health would have suffered. Not so. Haub's ‘bad’ cholesterol, or LDL, dropped 20 percent and his ‘good’ cholesterol, or HDL, increased by 20 percent. He reduced the level of triglycerides, which are a form of fat, by 39 percent.”

Despite his success, Haub does not recommend the diet. Lack of proper nutrients very likely has other effects on long-term health, including cancer risk.
