Doctors Discourage Repeat Calcium Heart Scans

A new report says that doctors should not perform repeat calcium scans on a routine basis. These scans reveal buildup of calcium in your heart, and doctors have argued that repeating scans over time in the same person would allow them to track growth and changes in calcified areas.

However, there is no solid evidence that repeat scans would lead to better treatments, and many experts have worried about the risks associated with the scans, which use high-dose x-rays.

According to Reuters:

“Commenting on President Obama's reported calcium scan earlier this year, for instance, medical journal editor Dr. Rita F. Redberg wrote that the ‘screening test likely exposed Mr. Obama to significant radiation unnecessarily, increasing his risk of future cancer.’”
