Darvon Found to Kill People and Pulled from the Market

Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals, the maker of Darvon and Darvocet, has announced that it will no longer market these widely used painkillers in the U.S. A study has linked propoxyphene, the active ingredient in the drugs, to potentially fatal heart rhythm abnormalities.

Xanodyne agreed to the ban at the request of the FDA, which also asked makers of generic propoxyphene drugs to halt U.S. sales.

The Chicago Tribune reports:

“The decision to yank propoxyphene brings the U.S. in line with regulatory agencies in Britain and the European Union, which pulled the drug from the market more than a year ago.”
