The Dirty Little Secret in the 'Natural' Foods Industry -- Toxic Chemical Use

Solvents banned from organic foods are used all too commonly by the “natural” food industry. The soy foods industry in particular uses the toxic solvent hexane. It is used to process common soy ingredients, such as soy protein isolate and soy protein concentrate.

Hexane is classified as a neurotoxin by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Cornucopia Institute has now released an online guide for buyers who want hexane-free products.

Cornucopia reports:

“Companies that showed their commitment to safer and more environmentally responsible food production practices by eliminating the use of hexane in their products include industry leaders Amy’s Kitchen and Nature’s Path ... [But] a particularly egregious example is industry leader Clif Bar, which states on its packages that it is ‘made with organic soybeans,’ while one of the first ingredients ... is a hexane-extracted soy protein isolate.”
