Confusing Medicine Labels Lead to Kids' Overdoses

A new study helps explain why medication errors and accidental overdoses are especially common among children. Almost all over-the-counter medications have confusing instructions or other problems that increase the risk that children will be given the wrong dose.

Twenty-six percent of products did not come with a method of measuring out a dose, and for products with such dispensers, label instructions on 99 percent conflicted with markings on the dispensing cup or dropper.

USA Today reports:

“ Nearly 5,700 children end up in the emergency room each year because their caregivers accidentally gave them an overdose of over-the-counter medications”.
