250 Billion Plastic Fragments in the Mediterranean

Somewhere around 250 billion microscopic pieces of plastic are floating in the Mediterranean Sea. This is creating a biological hazard throughout the entire food chain.

Micro-sized plastic becomes mixed with plankton. It is then ingested by small fish which are then subsequently eaten by larger predators. There is increasing evidence that this does damage to all forms of marine life, including larger creatures such as seals and tortoises.

Physorg reports:

"The estimate comes from French and Belgian marine biologists who analyzed water samples taken in July off France, northern Italy and Spain to a depth of 10-15 centimeters (four to six inches)."
