Vitamin D Accelerates Recovery from Tuberculosis

New research shows that vitamin D can hasten recovery from tuberculosis (TB). The study examined close to 150 patients with drug-sensitive TB, who received either oral doses of vitamin D or a placebo. Both groups also received standard antibiotic treatment.

The average time to clearance of TB was 6 weeks for patients taking standard therapy alone and 5 weeks for those taking additional vitamin D. Patients with a particular genetic type of vitamin D receptor recovered even more quickly.

Science Daily reports:

"122 [out of] 126 patients in the trial (97 percent), had inadequate levels of vitamin D at baseline. Vitamin D deficiency is a very common problem in TB patients".
