Common Sleep Drug Can Leave You Groggy and Clumsy

Popular sleep drugs can leave people groggy and prone to stumbling, falling and confusion when they wake up. Zolpidem (Ambien) in particular appears to act broadly in the brain and has a numbing effect for at least half an hour after waking.

The drug is also sold under brand names such as Zolpimist, Edluar, Hypogen, Somidem and Ivedal. The effects are less pronounced in adults under 60, but research showed that 27 percent of the younger people are also affected by zolpidem.

According to Reuters:

"The drug is extremely popular -- 7 billion doses of zolpidem have been prescribed worldwide ... Other sleep medications also have undesirable side-effects."
