A Possible Silver Lining for Hot Flashes

New research shows that the irritating symptoms many women experience at menopause, such as hot flashes and mood changes, may indicate a reduced risk for breast cancer.

The study reported that women who had the most severe hot flashes also had the lowest risk for postmenopausal breast cancer. Compared with women who never had the symptoms, they had only half the risk of developing cancers such as invasive ductal carcinoma and invasive lobular cancer.

According to the New York Times:

"The association between menopausal and perimenopausal symptoms and reduced cancer risk remained even after researchers accounted for other factors that increase cancer risk, like hormone replacement therapy and obesity."
