Humans Stink More Than Other Animals

The body odor that comes from sweaty adult human skin turns out to be unique in the animal kingdom. Humans are particularly smelly because odors are released from nearly every part of your body -- while at the same time, other species living on you are simultaneously emitting odors too.

This powerful scent attracts at least two species of mosquitoes, according to research.  And understanding what makes human odor so attractive to these bugs could help prevent the spread of diseases such as malaria and yellow fever.

Discovery News reports:

“While we tend to think of other animals as smelling more unpleasantly than we do, prior studies on both birds and other mammals revealed that significantly fewer volatile organic compounds emanate from the skin of these non-human species. Only a few carbolic acids have been detected on chicken feathers and giraffe hair, for example.”
