Autism Rate Triples Among Students

The number of special education students with autism in California has more than tripled since 2002.  What’s more, this has been occurring even as overall special education enrollment has remained stable.

The number of students diagnosed with autism climbed from just over 17,500 in 2002 to close to 60,000 in 2010.  This represented a jump in the percentage of special education students with autism from 2.6 percent to 8.8 percent.

California Watch reports:

“The data do not explain these shifts in disability diagnoses ...  Autism is the fastest-growing student disability in the country”.
