Can Moderate Alcohol Consumption Protect Against Heart Disease?

People who drink alcohol in moderation -- about one drink a day or less -- appear to be 14 to 25 percent less likely to develop heart disease compared to those who drink no alcohol at all. However, the study that showed this emphasized that consuming large amounts of alcohol is bad for you, even if drinking in moderation can have health benefits.

Moderate amounts of alcohol were found to significantly increase levels of 'good' cholesterol, which has a protective effect against heart disease.

Science Daily reports:

“Interestingly, [the] research concludes that it is the alcohol content that provides the health benefits not the type of alcoholic beverage (wine, beer or spirits) that is drunk.”
