Three in 4 Britons Felt Overwhelmed by Stress, Survey Reveals

Stress is an emotional health destroyer that we all feel at one time or another, but for some, their stress is so overwhelming that their ability to cope with everyday activities is next to impossible. As reported by The Guardian, 3 in 4 Britons have been so stressed over the past year that they feel that overwhelmed. The urgency of this is that severe stress not only can have severe physical health effects on you, but can also trigger suicidal feelings.

Among all the factors contributing to poor health and early deaths, stress is the most pernicious, with serious health consequences. Clearly, stress is an inescapable part of life — but it's important to understand that it is how you deal with it that will determine whether it will translate into health problems later on.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to reduce in your life, and to address it when you’re feeling it, including eating your way to a calmer mood. A diet based on real, whole foods, including fermented foods to optimize your gut flora, supports positive mood and optimal mental health, while helping you to bounce back from stress. For example, dark chocolate, berries, organic black coffee, bananas, animal-based omega-3 fats and turmeric (curcumin) tend to boost your mood, whereas sugar, wheat (gluten) and processed foods have been linked to poor mood.

Along with eating a healthy diet, incorporating movement and exercise into your day and ensuring proper sleep, meditation is a daily life-giving practice I highly recommend for addressing stress. Meditation also has long-term benefits when practiced consistently, including enhanced empathy and kindness, greater emotional resilience and increased gray matter in brain regions related to memory and emotional processing — all things that can help reduce stress before it happens. Essential oils are also a wonderful accompaniment to meditation, and can enhance your experience by promoting relaxation, peacefulness and mental clarity.
