Join the Fight to Get Mercury Out of Your Mouth

How would you feel if you found out you’d been lied to all along when it comes to your dental health? If you’ve ever had a cavity, and your dentist put “silver” fillings in your teeth, then you may be surprised to learn those fillings aren’t silver at all. It’s just a fancy word to throw you off from the fact that the major component of dental fillings, aka amalgam, is actually mercury, one of the most toxic and volatile heavy metals on Earth.

Studies show that people with mercury fillings in their mouths have elevated levels of the metal throughout their bodies, which cause neurological problems including memory and concentration problems, to name just two. Children are especially vulnerable to neurobehavioral functions associated with mercury exposure, and for this reason for the past eight years I’ve joined Consumers for Dental Choice in pushing for a mercury-free world.

The goal is to phase out the use of amalgam in North America and worldwide by partnering with consumer advocates, environmentalists and health professionals who work tirelessly to end the use of dental mercury everywhere. So far, we’ve been successful in getting a ban on mercury in children’s and pregnant and breastfeeding women’s teeth in Europe as of this summer.

This is a result of a 2013 international treaty to end mercury pollution, which became legally binding in 2017 — a treaty the U.S. signed onto, but has so far failed to enforce. So, for the eighth year in a row I am asking you to join us in the fight by giving what you can to the Campaign for Mercury Free Dentistry this week, August 12 to 19. When you do I will match your donation dollar for dollar up to $125,000.

Your donation will help us put the pressure on the U.S. and other countries around the world to follow Europe’s lead and end mercury in dentistry. The good news is there is a viable, safe and economical alternative to “silver” amalgam fillings, which thankfully a growing number of U.S. dentists now use. You can safeguard your health by asking your dentist if they offer amalgam-free fillings, and if they don’t, find one who does.

Don’t be misled by the “silver” lie — mercury is a poison that, even in adults, may have damaging effects on your nervous, digestive and immune systems, as well as your lungs, kidneys, skin and eyes, depending on exposure. Please, join me now in the fight to end the use of mercury in teeth. It’s so easy — just click here and I’ll match everything you give, dollar for dollar, up to $125,000. If you prefer to mail your donation, please send your check to: Consumers for Dental Choice, 316 F Street N.E., Suite 210, Washington DC, 20002

And thank you in advance!
