In an interview with The Economist, Bill Gates blamed
Americans’ belief in freedom as the reason why the U.S. was not as aggressive
in fighting coronavirus as other countries — specifically, China. While China
“clearly made mistakes … they did a very good job of suppressing the virus,”
Gates said.
Predicting that the worst is yet to come for the U.S., Gates
praised China for doing “’a very good job of suppressing the virus,’ thanks, in
part, to the ‘typical, fairly authoritarian’ approach and the ‘individual rights
that were violated.’” The reason the U.S. didn’t do as well, he said, was “we
believe in freedom, individual freedom.”
He added that conspiracy theories had slowed the effort to
combat the virus.
