It appears to me that Sweden followed the historical reaction to a virus by quarantining the ill and letting everyone else carry on. It certainly would have saved most of the economic ruin we now face. If only there was some way to show this approach would have resulted in less deaths in addition to saving everyone struggling financially.

Why didn't Sweden do anything? In a science experiment you always have a control. The problem is that society shouldn't be a science experiment. The idea of the precautionary principle (which may or may not be good) should apply with regards to any centralized authoritative action. Principle and rationality should rule over fear and emotion. It was and is known that interfering with commerce will lead to negative consequences for some and probably for all. Of course, from the perspective of those in power they wouldn't lose or be threatened with the loss of their jobs because government needn't turn a profit.
