Let’s start with 2 assumptions but you chan change both to fit your circumstances. So let’s assume 1 in 1000 people at any one time have the virus. Around the rate in the U.K. over the summer. And now assume the tests have a false positive rate of 1%. And we all know that would be a very favourable assumption. Some estimates I have seen say false positives could be over 20%. But we’ll assume only 1%. So test 1000 people and the tests will pick up the 1 person who has the virus but another 10 people who give false positives. The result, only 1 of the 11 positives is a real positive. Or put another way , if you test positive there is only a 9% chance you actually do have the virus.
