We used to do this with measles parties. People were healthier and smarter back then. Parents realized the value of lifetime immunity. They understood that they could choose the timing. The best time of year was summer when children were out of school, there was plenty of sunshine and children had been eating fresh food from the garden. Parents believed their children were strong enough to overcome childhood illnesses and it was no big concern other than the temporary inconvenience. They knew their children were strong and healthy.

That is what is wrong with the covid plan. Children are basically healthy and most are nearly symptom-free. If infected during the summer, they have an excellent chance of recovery. By delaying exposure until winter, when the worst outbreak is anticipated, it will hit harder.

One other thing in the news concerns me. It is all this talk of the medical system being racist because blacks do more poorly. If we were honest, we would actually look at racial differences instead of listening to those who claim bias. It is an established fact that most people with darker skin likely need more vitamin D than lighter skinned people. If govt wants to truly help these populations, they could start with vitamin D testing and optimizing serum levels where necessary. I say "optimizing", because to be "normal" is not the same as being in excellent health nowadays.

My husband tells of his mother asking him to make a card to deliver to Johnny when he was sick with measles. Later, my husband came down with measles. He asked if Johnny was going to visit him and bring a card. His mother replied, "That will not be necessary." The moment of insight was sort of like learning about Santa Claus... People my age enrolling in college are exempt from measles vaccination. We are immune
