So disappointing to see Mercola readers all in for giving the government this kind of power over the diets of our most helpless citizens. As if it would stop at sugar and cheese puffs. If you want to smoke, then smoke. If you want to eat sugar, eat it. I thought Mercola readers tended towards human freedom and dignity, not tyranny.

I get this would not prevent people from buying what they want, just not use taxpayer money to buy sugar. We should know by now that would be step one, of many.

You'll hear cries of racism and other 'ism's, bias against the poor, etc., but this makes sense to limit the food selection to healthy foods that will 1) make people healthier and therefore lower healthcare costs 2) incent people to hopefully not rely on the government programs if they wish to expand their food menu. Back in the day, the food selection had been limited to healthier foods until outcries of the aforementioned. Had they just left well enough alone, the less fortunate would be far healthier, likely healthier overall than those who don't rely on the government. This may also reduce the problem of food deserts.

How about only whole foods, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, eggs, etc. can be purchased ... AND a required course teaching about HFCS, sugar, omega 3's and 6's. Most Americans, poor and wealthy, are not educated about what healthy food even is. Most of my adult friends think milk is the best source of calcium based on years of marketing and propaganda.

Back in 2000, when I was in graduate school obtaining my MA in Health Education, I gave nutrition classes at the local Food Stamp office as an internship. I always had a full class. The people were very appreciative knowing how to get the best "bang for their buck". I'm appalled our gooberment doesn't see the NECESSITY of REQUIRING nutrition classes to be given to recipients before they get "free food". The only "advice" I've ever seen given to them were recipe books that the majority probably couldn't read! There are hundreds, if not thousands of qualified people who could present similar classes around the country, but apparently the system is designed to keep people fat and sick!

OK, so I was dumb. I actually ordered Dr. Mercola's book from Amazon early on when it first became available. The only question is why this book has suddenly become unavailable. I would like to know if copies have been bought up so they do not reach the market and get into the hands of people who want to read them. Censorship also exists outside of Canada... Today, I received this message from Amazon. Cannot say that I did not expect it.

It seems to me that a graduated workfare program for people working less than 40 hours a week--with very few people exempt (legitimate disabilities, etc.)--would greatly reduce the demand for these sorts of programs. If you had to "make work", the first thing I would do is hand out shovels and have people start digging community gardens. There is plenty of govt land in and around cities that could be used. You could also reduce the size of govt by giving additional tax breaks to churches and corporations that provided space for community gardens (relieve them of liability, the same as with pharmaceutical companies and vaccines!). The truth is that govt protects it's own fiefdom and resists any attempt to lower taxes, decrease it's size and stay out of our lives. That is why each household has to take action on their own.

Save heirloom seed and grow what you can, even if it is only intensive gardening on an apartment balcony. Take advantage of opportunities to fish, hunt, forage and glean. This may involve educating yourself, finding mentors and organizing with others. Know what you are putting into your body.

It would be unethical to impose obesity tax. We have to tackle obesity differently. With covid saga, it's now clear that healthy people were not impacted at all by the so called covid virus or other influenza viruses. Reversing obesity for already obese people would be challenging, but with patience encouraging them to improve their health is possible.. but amaerican health care system is BS, the pharma and hospitals and health professional get richer as the population get sicker.

This is just common sense but I'm sure there will be an uproar. Yeah people have the right to ingest as much crap and poison as they want I guess, but they can't expect taxpayers to subsidize it.
