The problem is not with government as much as it is private business like Amazon, Google, FB and the like who already has cornered the market on digital information about each of us on social media and decades of data collection about us. That cat got out of the bag long ago, no way to legislate a deletion of that info, and no telling who has copies of that personal data on us now. The algorithms for data collection are so abundant and secretive it is not only frightening, but unregulated. Then you have this guy Watts, who sits on the Forbes Business council and is the CEO of Corsight - a leading facial recognition tech company pushing his own agenda to install their software. Do we really know what associations there are with the NSA and these "public" companies? After all, there really is no need to duplicate cameras when they can all share the data.........

If they are doing facial recognition, them I might have to start wearing a mask! The larger problem then is gait recognition.

The ACLU has written about facial recognition for decades, and about Amazon owning and selling it. Cameras capable of scanning our eyeballs at freeway speeds, and even reading the print of an open book also at freeway speeds, are mounted to utility poles, wrote the ACLU. The problem here as I personally see it, concerns government over-reach and ill motives (framing people for self gain purposes, enforcing agendas, more). About the state of surveillance in general (not necessarily facial recognition): They also wrote that in London, where surveillance cameras are abundant, that voyeurism resulted and those watched were disproportionately women. Further, that the surveillance cameras did no good, the crimes moved from where cameras were, to where they weren't.

And one day you get arrested because you have a frown on your face!!! GOOD GRIEF!! And all of the "Hollywood" "plastic" crowd would have to have too many updates on their facial recognition!!!

Facial recognition would be valuable in arresting violent criminals but that would be considered to be "racist" because of the demographics of violent crime. But the technology could be abused to go after declared thought criminals too.
