When I was in Jr high and HS I hated gym--not having good eye/hand co-ordination and being clumsy did not help my self-esteem when not picked for teams. Some sports were just excuses for bullies to pick on others. I was very active though at home--running through the woods, and riding bikes, climbing trees, riding horses, doing chores. And wearing those horrid gym uniforms--ugh! And group showers --what a way to turn kids off fitness! At one of my girls schools they offered a choice of different actiivites which was good--and they wore shorts and t shirt which was a big improvement but still had the showers --as if teens aren't already showering enough at home( I had the water bills to prove it!).

re: Texas Unveils Fitness Test for Students

Nice place to start, but they still have not done much about nutrition in the schools. Most readers on this sight know that exercise can only do so much without dietary changes along with it.

Mary

re: Texas Unveils Fitness Test for Students

Hmmm.... I'll believe it when I see it. My 1st grader tells me when they have watched videos inside instead of playing outside (for recess), running with the other children in the abundant sunlight we have here in Dallas. She tells me, because she knows that I am like Uncle Russ, going to the school, giving them a piece of my mind.

re: Texas Unveils Fitness Test for Students

Good start for Texas. California used to follow the physical fitness guidelines set up by John F. Kennedy's encouragement. I understand that physical fitness testing went bye-bye years ago, though.

In ancient times, when I went to high school, we had four years of P.E. required. Locally now only two years of P.E. are required as cost cutting measures in the educational system. (They also cut out taking of showers after P.E. years ago because they couldn't afford to have clean towels--stinky pooh!!)
