It is NOT the nicotine that is the primary problem in cigs....It is all the nasty chemicals added to the tobacco and to the paper and even the filters. Plain, organically grown tobacco is not a problem, really. (I am not a smoker / have never smoked / do not care to....) Have been learning a lot about nicotine, tobacco and the benefits. However, do your due diligence and check out credible information on the topic

People get into horrible moods from tobacco withdrawal. If they had never become addicted in the first place, they would not be having those terrible moods that needed to be calmed down. I'm also remembering, on another note, that whenever the Europeans first started eating nightshades from the New World, they were concerned that some of them might be poisonous, might cause insanity, and might cause other effects, when they were trying things like domesticated tomatoes. Eggplants have been associated with mental illness, for instance. I read somewhere that you could go crazy from eating eggplants every day for a month, or something like that (I don't remember where I read this).

Cigarettes contain many toxic ingredients and are inflammatory. None of this is supportive of the brain or mental health. Physical health and nutrition often determine our state of mind. Toxicity disrupts metabolic functioning.

In the past, it was believed that nicotine did not cause intoxication or impairment, but today, nicotine is recognized as the very addictive drug found in tobacco products." Another Brave search, using keywords nicotine and mental illness, as follows: Nicotine in cigarettes stimulates the nervous system, resulting in a mood boost.

However, sad feelings may cause some people to smoke.3 Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), anti-depressants, and other medication have been shown to help smokers without mental health problems stop smoking, but they may also be helpful for people with depression or schizophrenia.4 Mental illness was associated with a substantially greater likelihood of nicotine withdrawal syndrome, and smokers with mental illness were motivated to quit but were less likely to be successful in their quit attempts.0 Nicotine dependency rate for individuals with behavioral health disorders is 2-3 times higher than the general population, and lifetime smoking rates are higher in patients diagnosed with major depression disorder (59%), bipolar disorder (83%), or schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders (90%) compared to 32% among adults with no mental illness.2 Nicotine can improve attention and concentration, appealing benefits for some mental health patients.1 favicon ncbi.nlm.nih.gov 0 favicon apa.org 1 favicon lung.org 2

That’s presumptive. A family member, who lives in a board and care for schizo effective illness and depression and overwhelming OCD spends her small stipend on cigarettes. The effect of smoking last a little while, but it is a night and day difference. She becomes calm, smiley, and lucid. Maybe the mentally ill smoke cause it helps them cope. While most families like their mentally ill loved ones on meds, most of the severely mentally ill that I know hate them. The owner of her board and care says most of the meds cause violence. I say, smoke on. Rigidity kills, plus we don’t live forever anyway..

And a few years ago, (I think it was Nova) did a report on "Making a Safer Cigarette" and cited how differences in drying could affect how much "bad stuff" was created. Hear studies like this, and you wonder what kind of tobacco they're using. Especially now that we're learning that Covid and a lot of related viruses are using our nicotine receptors as entry points. Just as states are starting to ban all tobacco use. Hmm.
